Restrictions for Privileges for Hypnotherapy Internationally

While hypnotherapy is largely unregulated in many parts of the world, several countries strictly require practitioners to hold a medical or mental health license(such as being a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist, or physician) to practice therapeutically.Countries with Strict Mental Health Licensing Requirements In these jurisdictions, “lay” hypnotherapy (practiced by those without a healthcare degree) is either heavily restricted or illegal for treating health conditions.

  • Israel: This is widely considered the most restrictive environment globally. By law, only licensed physicians, dentists, and psychologists who have undergone specialized training and passed theMinistry of Health’s examination are permitted to practice hypnosis.
  • South Africa: Since 1997, amendments to the Health Professions Act have restricted the practice of “hypnosis and hypnotherapy” exclusively to licensed psychologists or mental health practitioners.
  • South Korea: Medical law explicitly restricts “medical practice” to licensed medical personnel. Treating mental health conditions or psychological disorders via hypnotherapy generally requires a license as a a physician, psychiatrist, or psychologist.
  • France: Therapeutic or medical hypnotherapy is restricted to liscensed medical doctors, psychologists, or psychotherapists. While “non-medical” hypnosis for general well-being is unregulated, any practice involving diagnosis or medical treatment is prohibited for those without a health license.
  • Germany: To treat mental disorders with hypnosis, practitioners must be a licensed physician/psychologist or obtain a specific state license called Heilpraktiker Heilpraktiker für Psychotherapie(Healing Practitioner for Psychotherapy).
  • Norway: Under the Law for Alternative Treatments (CAM Act), using hypnotherapy to treat specific health-related conditions is restricted to qualified medical professionals. Unlicensed practitioners may only offer it for non-medical “self-development” or “relaxation”.The International Hypnosis Association+7

Regulatory Trends and Exceptions

  • United States(State-specific): Laws vary wildly by state. For example, in Washington state, hypnotherapists are classified as “counselors” and must register with the Department of Health.
  • Canada(Provincial): In Ontario, the title “Psychotherapist” is protected. If hypnotherapy is used in a therapeutic context, the practitioner may need to be registered with theCollege of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO).
  • Unregulated Markets: Countries like the United Kingdom,New Zealand, and Indiahave no specific statutory laws for hypnotherapy, allowing anyone to practice, though they often rely on voluntary professional bodies for self-regulation.The International Hypnosis Association+4
