Hypnotherapy and Trauma

When Hypnotherapy Is Not the First Step

If someone is in the early stages of trauma and cannot yet process what happened, hypnotherapy is not necessarily the right starting point. At that stage, people need to feel seen and heard. They need a trained, experienced provider who understands and respects where they are in the process. Meeting a person where they are comes first.

Meeting a person where they are comes first.

When It May Be Helpful

Hypnotherapy may be a good fit for someone whose trauma is in the past, particularly if they have:

  • Worked through it on their own, or set it aside or suppressed it over time.
  • Shut down their emotions long after the event.
  • Moved on in many areas of life, with new roles, places, and stages.

For these people, hypnosis may help them begin to feel safer inside their own bodies. After a session or two of TrancePlan hypnotherapy, some people find they are ready to talk about things they never spoke of before. They may not be able to describe what feeling safe is like, yet topics that were once off limits begin to surface.

Hypnotherapy may also support work on related concerns:

  • Ongoing anxiety.
  • Difficulty sleeping.
  • A constant sense that something bad is about to happen.
  • Neglecting self-care.
  • Difficulty trusting yourself or other people.

Hypnotherapy is not a cure for trauma, and results vary from person to person. It works best alongside other forms of support.

Are You Ready?

Many people who come to hypnotherapy already have some self-care habits in place. They may have tried meditation, yoga, spirituality or religion, reading, self-help books, or wellness programs. These efforts matter. They often build the foundation that makes deeper work possible.

Trauma in New York City

Life in New York can change “just like that.” Many people arrive from other parts of the country and the world and must adjust to a new lifestyle. They also face language and cultural differences, complex systems and bureaucracies, and the struggle to get by. Many carry trauma from the places they left, and the risk of new stress here is high.

Access and Cost

Cost is a real barrier. In October 2026, insurance cutbacks and rising medical costs are putting mental health care out of reach for many people. The last five years since the pandemic have been hard. Many people have had to take more of their health into their own hands as the quality of health care has declined. I expect more people to be dealing with trauma and stress.

If you cannot afford therapy or do not qualify for insurance, Open Path Collective offers sessions at reduced, sliding-scale fees.

A Note for Professionals and for Those With Resources

If you work with trauma survivors, remember to take care of your own health. If you have insurance or the financial means for self-care, you are in a position to help people who do not.

Everyone can do one small thing each day to look after themselves. Professional help can make those efforts more effective.

Why Getting Help Early Matters

In times of crisis, a person rarely stays the same. Things tend to get better or worse. That is why reaching out when you feel overwhelmed matters so much.

If you are in crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or call 911.
